"Joso Bridge, constructed 1911-12, has 55 spans with a total length of 3920 feet. Since 1967,
the base of rail at its deepest point is 194 feet above normal pool level. Pool level to streambed
is 67 feet." - Union Pacific Railroad
Washington's Lyons Ferry State Park lies in the shadow of this impressive structure built by The
North Coast RR Co. & The Oregon-Washington RR & Navigation Co., making camping and great photo angles
very easy to obtain. In addition to the quote above, the bridge also lies on a 0.60% eastbound grade.

The Flathead River was the second-most-striking body of water I observed on the trip. Its rich
blue-green hue and stunning surroundings left me dumbstruck. Bonus material: There's a Montana
Rail Link line on the other bank! A pity we didn't find a train to chase along here!

BNSF 7141 East climbs out of West Glacier alongside the Middle Fork Flathead River. It cheered
me tremendously to see a train with manned helpers, with every unit being an EMD product from the
1970s! |

Although it would still be light for hours, shadows start to grow long at 4:30 in the afternoon
when one is 3875 feet above sea level. BNSF 7141 East passes the helper base at Essex, MT, where the
Izaak Walton Inn has had a long tradition of being a popular tourist destination. |
