"The Trestle" - MP 177.3

CP 5939 and UP 3451 were the power for a ballast train CP ran on the north end of the Latta Sub in the spring of '03. They're seen here gingerly stepping out onto the old wood trestle across Lost Creek. (Terre Haute, IN, March 26, 2003)

A half-hour after the ballast train above went south, the afternoon XL came north, having been delayed at Spring Hill for most of the afternoon while the track crews were working. CP 6036 and 4617 had the honors this day. (Terre Haute, IN, March 26, 2003)

CP 5721 is on the point of the XL as it returns south with empties for Blackhawk. It's on the old Milwaukee Railroad "Belt Line," constructed to route MILW traffic around the east side of Terre Haute to avoid congestion downtown; here, the Belt crosses the old PRR East Yard. The empty XL, with CP 5727 and Soo 4415 in charge, starts up the hill leading to the bridge over the Pennsy. The track in the foreground used to be the west interchange track, and is now used to serve an industry. Notice the difference between this photo and the one above -- this one was taken the next day! CNW 8831 is in full dynamics as it slows for a crew change at Ferree Road, a short distance south of... well, what remains of Spring Hill Tower's foundation. On Saturday, September 29, I toured a delegation from the Purdue Model Railroad Club around the Terre Haute region; we caught the XL with CP 5757 leading at the Blackhawk detector. (Blackhawk, IN, 2001)

CP 5829 is on the point of a loaded coal train sitting on the spur to Farmersburg Mine in Blackhawk, IN. The sun is peeking out through the clouds above the stand of trees at left. (March 10, 2001)

Slowly creeping around the south wye at sunset, CSXT 8099 and CP 5853 are on the point of an empty train entering the Farmersburg Mine spur. (November 19, 2003)

On a sunny Saturday in June, INRD 44 North rounds the south wye at Blackhawk (top) and creeps westward across soy fields towards Farmersburg Mine with 65 empty IPL cars (middle). One afternoon in March, I got really excited when I heard the Latta DS give a "UP 5088 South" a warrant from Spring Hill to Keller. I jumped in the car, confirmed the "train" was in the siding at Keller to wait for the XL, and headed south of Blackhawk to scout out a spot. This location was the result; what I was not expecting was a light engine move! (March 23, 2003)

I caught train 123 at a crossing near the north end of the yard; power was Soo 4601, 2011, and 4509. (September 29, 2001, Jasonville, IN)
