13th Street - MP 173.6
 |
The southbound XL (empties from PSI-Fayette) crosses over 13th Street as it approaches Dewey. (Terre
Haute, IN, April 29, 2002) |
Dewey - MP 174.7
 |
Northbound XL-118 with CP 5901 and Soo 6606 is seen crossing the CSX CE&D Sub at Dewey.
The rear of the train is still on the diamond over the St. Louis Line at Preston.

Van Yard - MP 176.1
 |
Soo 4411 is in charge of the southbound XL at Van Yard. (Terre Haute, IN, June 01, 2004) |
 |
Soo 2041, an ex-MILW GP40, idles at the south end of Van waiting for a trip south on the XL.
(Terre Haute, IN, October 07, 2003) |
 |
On the cold morning of January 31, 2004, the XL rolled into Van with a colorful consist of
CP 4513, Soo 2057, and Soo 4448. (Terre Haute, IN) |
"The Trestle" - MP 177.3
 |
CP 5853 has CSXT 8099 in tow as the XL rolls over the trestle and approaches the Van.
(Terre Haute, IN, December 01, 2003) |
 |
CP 5939 and UP 3451 were the power for a ballast train CP ran on the north end of the Latta Sub
in the spring of '03. They're seen here gingerly stepping out onto the old wood trestle across
Lost Creek. (Terre Haute, IN, March 26, 2003) |
 |
A half-hour after the ballast train above went south, the afternoon XL came north, having been
delayed at Spring Hill for most of the afternoon while the track crews were working. CP 6036 and
4617 had the honors this day. (Terre Haute, IN, March 26, 2003)
|
 |
CP 5721 is on the point of the XL as it returns south with empties for Blackhawk. It's on the old
Milwaukee Railroad "Belt Line," constructed to route MILW traffic around the east side of Terre Haute
to avoid congestion downtown; here, the Belt crosses the old PRR East Yard. (Terre Haute, IN,
March 26, 2002) |
 |
The empty XL, with CP 5727 and Soo 4415 in charge, starts up the hill leading to the bridge over the Pennsy.
The track in the foreground used to be the west interchange track, and is now used to serve an industry.
Notice the difference between this photo and the one above -- this one was taken the next day! (Terre Haute,
IN, March 27, 2002) |
Deming Park - MP 179.0
 |
Soo 4441 leads a southbound train past the gazeebo in Deming Park. (Terre Haute, IN,
October 04, 2003) |
Belt Junction - MP 181.7
 |
SOO 4401 is returning south to Belt Junction after switching a grain elevator
in Terre Haute on September 23, 2000. |
Ferree Road - MP 183.2
 |
CNW 8831 is in full dynamics as it slows for a crew change at Ferree Road, a short
distance south of... well, what remains of Spring Hill Tower's foundation. Trailing
is a somewhat healthier sister-in-law, a GE in UP paint that was not trying to be
an Alco (and impress this nor'easter). (Spring Hill, IN, May 19, 2001) |
Blackhawk - MP 192.0
 |
A southbound CP potash train is just a few miles south of Spring Hill Tower on
a sunny February 10, 2001, seen here passing over a defect detector. (Blackhawk,
IN) |
 |
On Saturday, September 29, I toured a delegation from the Purdue Model Railroad Club
around the Terre Haute region; we caught the XL with CP 5757 leading at the Blackhawk detector.
(Blackhawk, IN, 2001) |
 |
CP 5829 is on the point of a loaded coal train sitting on the spur to
Farmersburg Mine in Blackhawk, IN. The sun is peeking out through the clouds
above the stand of trees at left. (March 10, 2001) |
 |
Slowly creeping around the south wye at sunset, CSXT 8099 and CP 5853 are on the point of an
empty train entering the Farmersburg Mine spur. (November 19, 2003) |

 |
On a sunny Saturday in June, INRD 44 North rounds the south wye at Blackhawk (top) and
creeps westward across soy fields towards Farmersburg Mine with 65 empty IPL cars (middle).
(June 19, 2004)
The next morning, the loaded INRD coal train waits at the E. Tryon Drive grade crossing for a
crew to take it south. (June 20, 2004) |
 |
One afternoon in March, I got really excited when I heard the Latta DS give a "UP 5088 South"
a warrant from Spring Hill to Keller. I jumped in the car, confirmed the "train" was in the siding
at Keller to wait for the XL, and headed south of Blackhawk to scout out a spot. This location
was the result; what I was not expecting was a light engine move! (March 23, 2003) |
Lewis - MP 195.5
 |
CNW 8828 and UP 6604 are drifting downgrade after bringing train G17 over the crest at
MP 193.0. (April 15, 2003) |
 |
UP 7140 & 7063 traverse western Indiana cornfields with Powder River Basin coal destined for
Ameren's Newton Power Plant. (June 20, 2004) |
Lewis Dock - MP 201.0
 |
INRD 44 North accerates past Lewis Dock as it departs Jasonville, IN, bound for Farmersburg
Mine. (June 19, 2004) |
Latta Yard (Jasonville) - MP 204.2
 |
I caught train 123 at a crossing near the north end of the yard; power was Soo 4601, 2011, and 4509.
(September 29, 2001, Jasonville, IN) |
 |
A close-up shot of Soo 2011, still wearing Milwaukee Railroad paint. At the time, this was
only the second unit I had seen in the "Bandit" scheme. (September 29, 2001, Jasonville, IN) |
 |
Quite a surprise found at Latta was St. Lawrence & Hudson SD40-2 5627, sitting in the
diesel servicing area. It was nice to see another native New Yorker out in Indiana!
(September 29, 2001, Jasonville, IN) |
 |
With clouds blocking much of the sunlight, CP 5901 leads XL-118 south into
Latta Yard with coal empties. (Jasonville, IN, March 10, 2001) |
 |
G07, the Latta Yard job, shuffles cars using an eclectic lashup of CP 8613, UP 7506, and SOO
4452 & 4411. (June 20, 2004) |
 |
Soo Geeps 4405, 4441, and 4446 await permission to come off the Latta Branch with loads
from Kindill No. 3 Mine. (Jasonville, IN, March 03, 2003) |
 |
Soo 2041 and a second Soo Geep kick coal cars around at CP's Latta Yard in
Jasonville, IN. (February 04, 2001) |
 |
Train 787 throttles up as it lugs 110 loaded coal cars up the hill at the south end of Latta
Yard. A mile south of here, the train will diverge onto the INRD Midland Sub and head west for
Newton, IL. (June 20, 2004) |
 |
INRD 45 and HLCX 7229 idle on the head end of an IPL coal train at the south end of Latta Yard.
(Jasonville, IN, November 05, 2001) |

 |
CNW 8828 and UP 6604 are holding G17 back with dynamics as they approach the turnout to
diverge onto the INRD Midland Sub. (April 15, 2003) |
Linton - MP 212.6
 |
Soo 2010, one of the ex-Milwaukee GP40s, leads two sister geeps and three cars southward
across the INRD diamond at Linton. (April 04, 2003) |
White River Bridge - MP 222.0
