Take a tour of Bord na Mona's fascinating narrow gauge railway system.

When planning for my honeymoon, I naturally wanted to see some railroad things that were distinct to Ireland and Scotland. Scotland was easy — the famous Forth Bridge and West Highlands Line (for the Jacobite steam train) were easy choices. For Ireland, though, I didn’t have a clue.

I reviewed a recent Trains Magazine article about the Irish mainline network and learned that there was frequent passenger service on numerous lines, along with a growing base of freight traffic. I started poking around looking for likely photo locations, only to stumble across the unexpected phrases “Bord na Mona,” “narrow gauge,” and “peat bog.” Intrigued, I dug further, and was instantly hooked after I found my way to Ted McAvoy’s Bord na Mona Wiki.

I traded emails with Ted and he was most considerate in sharing advice about where to go, when things happen and who to contact, but the real breakthrough was when an email I sent to Bord na Mona itself was answered — just days before we departed — with a short response from Corporate Communications informing me that the local manager was ready to “arrange your visit.” A large corporation willingly opening its doors to a couple strangers from another country? Unheard of!

Follow along as Cortney and I meet a group of incredibly gracious and considerate railroaders who unhesitatingly take time out of their busy days to show us around the fascinating operations at West Offaly Power Station in Shannonbridge, Co. Offaly, and the nearby Blackwater bog network in Cos. Offaly, Galway and Roscommon.

All the track -- tangent, curved and even turnouts -- comes in 40-foot-long pre-assembled panels that are simply laid directly on the peat end-to-end, much like a child's train set. Mainline track is generally ballasted since it's intended to be more permanent. In places where excessive settlement is encountered, a fabric sheet is unrolled first to distribute the load and resist sinking into the bog. The extremely wide crawler tracks on the crane are necessary to minimize its applied ground pressure -- sinking into the bog (which isn't an irregular occurrence) is bad for a crew's productivity." class="shutterset_set_10" >

This is the view through the front windshield of LM409 shortly after we came off the diverging leg of the wye at the entrance to the bog and stopped to line the turnout for the normal route; behind us, the line continues south to West Offaly Power Station. Mainline track is clearly maintained in better condition than the temporary loading spurs, being fairly straight, mostly level and generally ballasted. Upkeep is required to keep things in shape, though; left alone, track will fall victim to the soggy bog and lose all semblance of proper alignment, as we would later witness." class="shutterset_set_10" >

Normally left with the gates set across the tracks, upon approaching a crossing rakes must stop; the driver dismounts, walks ahead and swings the gates to block the road, which activates the flashing lights. As a labor-saving measure, BnM ingeniously connected the derails to the crossing gates with a cable-and-pulley system which simultaneously lines the derails to the closed position as the gates are lined for train movements. In the image at left, Michael is still in the process of pushing the gate across the roadway, and the derail is open. On the right, once the gate is fully across the roadway, the cable is triggered and closes the derail (note how the pulley has rotated through about 30 degrees). The springs are another safety measure, acting as a fail-safe to hold the derail open and keep motorists safe. It's little bits of ingenuity like this that make BnM's peat-hauling operations so fascinating." class="shutterset_set_10" >

But of course: I got to drive a loco across a peat bog on my honeymoon -- how thoroughly awesome is that? As for this scene: In my right hand is the transmission control, in my left is the throttle lever, and on the left armrest is the brake. The locos are designed to be operated bidirectionally, and the chair swivels around so that the operator can face the direction he's moving.
Cortney and I had an amazing time meeting BnM’s employees, who without fail were gracious with their time, knowledge, supplies of tea, sense of humor and fundamentally cheery nature, and we thank them for granting us the opportunity to explore a fascinating operation that is completely unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in the US.

This becomes abundantly clear when one wanders along these lines, both existing and abandoned, as they closely follow waterways, take advantage of naturally-formed canyons and snake amongst the region's characteristic rolling hills.

However, sometimes the engineers came to a barrier that left them no choice but to move a significant amount of dirt and rock so they could create an efficient passage to the other side. Such is the case on the south approach to St. John, where the PV Sub reaches the head of Downing Creek's valley and punches through a ridge line to reach its namesake Pleasant Valley. With a dead-in-tow GP40 (shut down to conserve fuel) and 15 empties on the draw bar, a distinctly ex-C&NW GP50 passes freshly-cut wheat stalks as it works hard to reach the summit at Milepost 16.5." class="shutterset_set_8" >

I can’t deny it: Baby horses are just downright cute. They’re adorable. They’re soft and fuzzy and skittish and curious and you just want to pack them up in the back of your vehicle and take them home — though this isn’t entirely the most practical thing you’d ever do as the foals grow. Fast. They also eat a lot, so you’d better have a pretty big lawn for them to graze upon.

These photos depict some of the foals I’ve had the utter delight to feed (and photograph) on a near-weekly basis throughout 2011 from their births in April.

I firmly believe that there is no better time to visit Stevens Pass for railroad photography than on winter nights. A line that can be tough to work in daylight suddenly opens up with infinite new possibilities, few of which feature the train so much as the atmosphere surrounding the railroad environment.

Opportunities range from capturing the surreal, to portraying the ethereal, to lighting up the boundaries between two worlds, to finding different ways of portraying the same scene…

In one of those incredibly rare instances where everything just came together perfectly, as I was setting up this photo the clouds overhead tore open and let the moonlight filter through to shine down on the snow-covered forest. In the distance I heard the faint cry of a horn blowing for a grade crossing in Skykomish, and a few minutes later the sound of hard-working GEs -- muted by the thousands of snow-laden limbs -- became audible over the burble of the river's water flowing amongst the rocks below. Finally, as the snow continued to fall, an eastbound Z train burst out onto the Foss River bridge, the bright beams of its highlights reflected by the snow-covered trees to cast a golden glow throughout the scene. Then, seemingly in an instant, it was over -- the train gone, taking its light and noise with it; a thick cloud drifting across the sky, returning the forest to its proper nighttime darkness; and all that remained was the familiar sound of the river's rushing water, reminding me that I had awoken from my living dream and returned to normality." class="shutterset_set_3" >

With a roar, the lead units of an eastbound coal empty escape the confines of the bore and shatter the stillness.

11:20pm: But that dramatic scene was five minutes ago. Now, with the head end around the next bend and having dropped into dynamics while the rear DPUs remain inside the tunnel, silence has mostly returned, the calming sound of wheels rolling on welded rails punctuated only by the occasional squeal of a flange rubbing against the railhead. This peaceful interlude in the midst of 6,000 feet of steel and aluminum trundling eastward beneath the Cascade Range and a clear, cold sky won't last; shortly, the trailing units will emerge into the artificial, temporary brightness, followed by a 20-minute "flush" from the incredibly loud fans that despoil the tranquility of an extended winter's last night.
The lesson here: Don’t be afraid of the elements. Prepare yourself to handle the likely challenges, then get out there and let your imagination run free.

This time of year, once the sun heads south, temperatures drop and moisture-laden storms start stacking up in the mountains, the Evergreen State becomes anything but. After the first big snowfall arrived a week before Thanksgiving, I set out into the wilderness with my camera, a case of water and four-wheel drive.

In a narrow valley on the east side of Stevens Pass, I found an empty grain train cruising downgrade along Nason Creek through a Cascade Range conifer forest covered in a clean coating of fresh white snow. Welcome back, winter; we have missed you.

Earlier in the day, that same train approached the west portal of Cascade Tunnel, partially obscured in this view from high above by fog and flying snow.

Shooting on Stevens Pass can be hazardous even when sitting still; while waiting for the train to depart Scenic, I nearly got plowed in by a WSDOT snow crew.

(here lies snow plow image)

The ground around downtown Skykomish has long been known to be heavily polluted after decades of unfortunate dumping by the railroad. However, over the last few years, significant effort and expense has been applied to excavate all the contaminated soil and clean up the town, with this work finally concluding in late 2011. I stumbled into the end of a celebration behind held for officials involved with the project and captured this photo of a 7 1/2″ scale live steam engine, an NP 0-4-0, being packed up at the end of the day as a westbound passes by.

A group from Port Orchard brought by some 7 1/2" scale live steam equipment for the festivities; as they were packing up for the day to return home, a 1:1 scale train passed by with intermodal containers bound for the Port of Tacoma." class="shutterset_singlepic24" >

The next day, Amtrak’s westbound Empire Builder crossed Nason Creek and entered the narrow confines of the Slot on the 2.2% climb to Cascade Tunnel. Although their train was running nearly two hours late this day, passengers on No. 7 benefited by experiencing a daylight ride through the spectacular snow-covered scenery of Stevens Pass. Visible in the windshield is the engineer’s hand as he waved a greeting to the photographer.

An overnight slide fence problem had basically shut down the line until the tracks could be inspected in daylight, and as a result no additional trains were called out of Wenatchee or Seattle until it was confirmed that the line was open. With a long morning lull looming, I retreated to Skykomish for an excellent breakfast at the Cascadia Inn, Cafe and Lounge. Afterward, it was a simple matter to walk down the street, cross the tracks and wait for the daily Z-SSECHC to show up.

I meandered back to the east side of the pass, stumbling across a westbound stack train at Winton that conveniently stopped to wait for the Z to pass amidst a sudden burst of flurries.

A couple older CSX GEs -- both wide and standard cab versions of the venerable C40-8 -- were lending a hand far from home this day." class="shutterset_singlepic22" >
