A friend of mine tipped me off that one of the FRA track inspection cars would be doing calibration runs between Ballard and Edmonds this day, so I headed up to Carkeek Park to get a few shots. The train was delayed by hours getting out of Seattle for a variety of reasons, so the sunny skies that I enjoyed during my drive to the park had vanished by late morning. Traffic was light, but I did get to shoot a few trains before the special showed up.

North Beach, WA BNSF 6842 smokes away as the M-LYDVBT1-29A heads east towards Everett.

North Beach, WA Amtrak Cascades No. 513 rushes westward towards King Street Station, passing the small delta of Pipers Creek on the Carkeek Park beach.

North Beach, WA I hung around on the beach to shoot another freight that was following Amtrak, then headed back to the Jeep. As I was trudging through the sand I heard a rubmle across the water and turned around to see an eastbound rounding Meadow Point. I ran to the pedestrian bridge and barely had enough time to set up for this view of the S-SEACHI1-28A at the same location where I had photographed No. 513 fifteen minutes earlier.

North Beach, WA Of course, Seattle being Seattle, the moment the dispatcher finally set the test car loose, it started to rain; by the time the train arrived at Carkeek Park it was pouring, and the rain didn't let up for the two hours that I sat around. Finally, since I was bored, cold and had received a weather report from my Dad stating that I'd have to get on a boat and go west to get out from under the rain, I got soaked while shooting the train cruising westbound on its third calibration pass.

Giving up on the day, I headed home to dry out before meeting up with a friend visiting from out of town, and with whom I would go railfanning the next day.
