Once again, the forecast promised a cold but cloudless morning, so I headed out before dawn with a specific purpose in mind...

Puyallup, WA The sun's first rays of a new day play across a farm near Puyallup.

Puyallup, WA With Mt. Rainier dominating the horizon, BNSF train U-EVEROO1-16A -- known simply as "the garbage train" after its cargo -- sweeps through the curve south of the Stewart crossovers shortly after sunrise.

Titlow, WA I returned home for a few hours before heading out again in the afternoon. On my way south I stopped at Titlow to scope out the view of the tracks with the Tacoma Narrows Bridges in the background. I heard a northbound coming and set up for a going-away shot, and it wasn't until after the train had passed that I realized the leader was a foreign visitor: Ferromex (Ferrocarril Mexicano) #4521.

Fort Lewis, WA I left Titlow before a late-running Cascades No. 507 arrived, so I decided to head back down to Solo Point for the rest of the evening. A bit after 4pm, BNSF 7000 led V-CHCPTL8-14A southward along the shore of Puget Sound.

A spectacular sunset began to develop...

Fort Lewis, WA I took a break from shooting the scenery to turn around and capture this view of UP train MSEHK rolling southward past Steilacoom.

Fort Lewis, WA Ketron Island, Anderson Island's ferry dock and the Olympic Mountains.

Fort Lewis, WA The sunset continued to become more brilliant...

Fort Lewis, WA The tranquility was briefly spoiled by loaded BNSF grain train G-THPTAC9-09A (visible as the triangular headlight pattern at left) passing a nearby rock quarry's barge-loading pier.

Fort Lewis, WA Finis.
