On the last day of my trip to Seattle I spent the night in Boise and headed west during morning rush hour. Eventually, I-84 started closely following Union Pacific's Huntington Subdivision in eastern Oregon, and to my delight I heard the dispatcher tell a MOW crew that he had an eastbound train coming to Pleasant Valley, not too far from where I was at the time.


Oxman, OR UP 4092 cruises downgrade through the valley of Alder Creek alongside I-84 before swinging east through a 6-degree-to-4-degree reverse curve.

Durkee, OR After navigating the horseshoe curve above Durkee, the eastbound is back up to track speed as it departs town.

Weatherby, OR Approaching Weatherby, I-84 and the Huntington Sub parallel each other through the confines of the Burnt River canyon; this spot is a mile and a half west of Weatherby siding.

Weatherby, OR A mile east of Weatherby, Tunnel No. 6 punches through a spur of Weatherby Mountain; my photo of UP 4092 popping out of the concrete-lined structure would be my last of this chase as I needed to continue my journey westward.

Home Valley, WA Much later in the day I crossed the Columbia River at The Dalles and followed Washington SR 14 west towards Vancouver. Somewhere around Bingen or Cooks I passed a westbound freight and decided to set up for a shot I recalled from my Western Road Trip two and a half years earlier. It started raining pretty hard and I nearly gave up on the shot, I stuck it out and rather like the resulting view of the H-RRBVAW framed in the portal of the Wind River bridge with the wispy clouds hiding the distant bluffs of the Columbia River Gorge.
